I do like the KTMs as well, six years ago the SMC and 690 Enduro were on my short list when I found a really good deal on a Husqvarna 610SM. I don't quite understand you as the SMC and 690 Enduro are basically the same bike with the difference being the SMC having seventeen inch supermoto wheels and the enduro having the larger dirt oriented wheels.

The 690 is certainly better offroad than any drz. I've done OBCDR for 8 days on it carrying everything, with 3 other riders, 2 of which also bought 690's (and also amateur racers), the other was a retired pro that picked an rxv. We all found it the perfect long distance light adventure bike. It does ride tall which is a turn off for shorter riders.
KTM 500 EXC-F – plenty of power, best for off-road and experienced riders ; Honda XR650L – simple, reliable, stable/heavier, and good all-around; KTM 690 Enduro R – Great engine, a little heavier and more stable than the 650 dual-sport bikes; Husqvarna 701 Enduro – Same as KTM 690 but “white”
Setting up my 2013 USDM enduro R for a 5000 mile trip from SoCal to Banff, down CDT to Mexican border and back to Socal. I'm maybe 210lbs with riding gear, adding RR 9.5L aux tanks and should have about 50-60lbs of gear on the tail centered around a GL Coyote bag. I'm an intermediate level rider but we'll be riding conservatively on this trip.
The best mods we could muster for a short rider to tour the 690!BLOG= I had a ktm 690 enduro r and it was definitely better offroad but onroad it's no comparison, T7 is a better all around bike imo. If you weren't doing any highway riding and just wanted something barely street legal it would be a different answer. If I was choosing a bike to ride around the world on the T7 would be on the short list. For comparison, KTM’s 690 SMC-R – surely the new Hypermotard’s closest rival – has a bigger 693cc engine and peaks at 73.8hp and a much lower 8,000rpm. The Ducati’s torque is 46.3lb-ft at 8,000rpm, reflecting the downside of such a high-revving engine. For comparison, the KTM makes 52.4lb-ft at 6,750rpm thanks to its larger capacity.
As a short, female motorcycle rider, Kris tries out several Giant Loop soft luggage options on her KTM 690 Enduro R to help solve issues she was having with
Dirt Rider magazine says the 690 is a winner in a 1 bike class. So no comparison the KTM will own the XT but the KTM cost 30%+ More $$$$. DR did an article on the 650 Japanese D.S. bikes than one on the 690 because it just couldn't compare to the others.

189. Location: Sacramento, CA. Howdy pilgrims, I have my 2014 KTM 690 enduro R, and it has the SMC wheels and the Stock enduro wheels. When I bought the bike, it had the SMC wheels on it, now that winter is coming I'm going to be throwing the stock knobbies back on it. The gearing for my SMC wheels is 15F/41R. The enduro wheel gearing is 15F/45R. KTM's 790 stock height and weight distribution is more comfortable for shorter folks. You can get lower links and lower seat. I don't know if the 890 shares the same spec (probably). KLR's are tall, vStroms are tall, Tigers are tall. KTM 690 Enduro is tall but skinny like a dirt bike (SM shorter).

Second is almost the same, third is between third and fourth of the KTM, same with fourth gear and as you can see, fifth of the BMW is taller than sixth of the KTM. At race pace on the track, the 6 speed of the KTM would win, but in the real world, with a slower rider (ME), the BMW’s gearing is better.
