If you want the full Half-Life: Alyx experience, you will need to be able to control the game. Half-Life: Alyx often takes advantage of VR controllers, having you grab stuff and toss objects and press buttons while fighting enemies. You could consider using previously owned controllers that have been damaged by Gorilla Tag.
